 In 1975, The Geological Society of London organised the first edition of their International Geo-Summit. Originally meant to happen in London, the meeting took place in Bude, Cornwall, an open book for the History of the World, the perfect place to try to understand its Future. The exposed angled layers of sandstone, mudstone and various types of strata all along the coastline’s monumental cliffs seemed at the time to be the perfect scenery for such a meeting. On the 300 millions year old Bude Formation, the timeline of the Earth’s major climatic and geological events was going to be reviewed and analysed in order to understand patterns of future scenarios. From the Earth’s collision with Theia to the Ordovician Extinction and the Cretaceous high sea levels, many topics were covered. On that 15th of March, the auditorium was full with Geologists, Physicists, Historians, Activists and Architects. It is said that a certain Guido Mancini, an architect from the outskirts of Florence attended the Lecture. Not a lot is known about the man apart from the fact that he left the place in a rush, with fear on his face. Ten years later, in 1985, as the second edition of the Geo-Summit was about to start, a mysterious package was found in one of the auditorium’s backroom. Meticulously signed by hand with two letters : G.M, the box contained drawings and plans and a model for Bude’s future. This series of works by G.M. portrayed the paranoid and thorn nature of the man, while speculating on extreme scenarios and possible interventions, to keep control over the landscape.

Time here is not counted by ticks or gears, but by the slow arc of light across a hill, the hush between one breath and the next. In Bude’s valleys, we remember that to observe time is to wait, patiently aligning ourselves with processes far larger than any clock can measure. Stargazing was once our anchor to the cosmos. We sat in darkness, heads tipped skyward, learning that some truths arrive only when the heart is still.
 
Today our eyes turn inward, trusting instruments and algorithms to chart the stars. But instruments record; they do not feel. 
 
Here, waiting becomes a kind of knowing. Each valley offers a stage: one to sense the echo of a shifting sky, another to glimpse fractured reflections of distant worlds, and another to feel the pulse of hidden rhythms resonating through stone and air. In each place, you must linger—listen to the slow dialog of shadow and shine, and allow your pulse to sync with the drifting lights. Only then will the stars reveal their secret order, sketching invisible lines across the land.
 
Time here, like the constellations, belongs not to those who hurry, but to those who wait.

Communication will always involve some degree of misalignment and misunderstanding and will therefore always be approximate. The misalignment comes from the reaction between our physical environment and our desire to communicate. The physical environment creates resistance and might prevent us from taking action. I am questioning what makes space structured and what makes it negotiable if architecture is the formal suit of the terms of engagement, and how these designated boundaries shape behaviour. 

This became clear to me in Bude, Cornwall. Where I saw what happens when architecture is no longer disruptive, when it’s taken for granted. It begins to lose its agency and becomes complacent. The GCHQ, the tennis court, the post office, Summerleaze Beach, the Embankment, and Alan’s house are all examples of how communication is controlled, disturbed, or made visible through architecture. These elements are not neutral: a glass window, a fence, or a line on a map are all materialised agreements about who is where, and under what terms. The project identifies two spatial conditions: the scripted and the dialectic. Where one enforces order, the other invites negotiation. The film asks: What does a fair conversation look like, and how can architecture support it?

Without bricks, an arch cannot be made, but an arch is nothing more than bricks.

Materials and site elements have desires, desires they want to express. So do humans who coexist with architecture. When site elements and the desires of humans are harmonious, inspiration is born. When a space facilitates the key desires of humans, it inspires use within the human, incepting an idea of use, of how that space could be used. 

The four elements on Compass Point in Bude, Cornwall, all have desires they want to express. They want to be used, they want to express how and why they were built. But, they cannot do so until the spark of inspiration is set. For that to happen, the elements and the humans’ desires must converge into spaces. Only then can the elements inspire use in people.

A symbol of the town wants to gather people, a rock which was once a chapel wants to inspire individual rituals, stone arches and their lobster traps and campfires want people to learn, and a colonnade of rocks wants people to venture out. Once their interconnected inspirational, muse-like qualities are acknowledged and acted upon can they be in harmony with people

Connectivity lies in its ability to spread and expand. It exists within shared layers of common physicality and history, which lead to new outcomes and possibilities.
Connectivity tells a story of how the world operates as one interconnected system, leaving traces of constant movement and change over time.
Today, connectivity takes a unique spatial form: the internet. AI algorithms use vast amounts of data to anticipate people's desires, preferences, and potential deviances.
These predictive systems dictate what is seen online, what products are recommended, and even what news should be encountered.

This power of images distorts reality and forms a visual fragmentation.

Formed on rich cornich land, the Delabole slate quarry forms new ways of seeing reality and its ability to tell new information within just the frame of a screen – a central form to which we connect today. Presenting the quarry as an educational environment, inserted screens would act as spatial tools that connect distant locations and intense narratives, encouraging us to question how places, stories, and functions are linked.

The proposal makes the landscape to be seen not just as isolated parts but as a living system of material, spatial, and historical relations. It aims to make these hidden networks visible where the physical and the digital, the past and the present, converge.

Bude’s local community is responding to a lack of infrastructure with low-tech, colorful, economic placeholders. A miniature Bude station in the minigolf is the closest they have gotten to getting a life-size, functional connection to the English Railway Network in the last 50 years. Eroding cliffs are replicated in the adventure center so that people can keep climbing on them.

In this world of vernacular placeholders, enchantment and infrastructure are set in an either-or relationship; the lack of infrastructure is precisely what generates these enchanting moments.

By reimplementing and designing a connection between Bude and the English railway network, I would like to suggest that vernacular enchantment and functional infrastructure do not need to be opposed. Perhaps the design of required infrastructure could be inspired by these placeholders. Perhaps, these economic placeholders offer valuable design input.

While aiming to provide a pragmatic solution to Bude’s infrastructural needs, the project poses broader and open-ended questions of whether we can institutionalize bricolage, and whether the enchanting qualities of these infrastructural placeholders are inextricably dependent on its original context of scarcity or not.

 An isolated landscape, entering a phase of dysfunction.

Bodmin Moor is vast and exposed, marked by persistent traces of human activity—tractor lines, dry stone walls, and disused settlements inscribed into its terrain. These remnants reveal a land shaped by labour over time, but no longer socially sustained.

Pressures on agricultural maintenance are increasing, as highlighted by the Bodmin Moor Hill Project. Farmers remain continuous users of the land; however, their role is becoming increasingly untenable. Hikers, in contrast, pass through temporarily; they exist as observers. They never meet, they never speak.

Protocols for a Shared Landscape proposes a spatial framework operating between these two rhythms. Through a sequence of site-specific interventions timed to seasonal cycles and pedestrian flow, the project establishes moments of adjacency without collapsing difference. Architecture becomes a mediator, structuring co-presence without necessitating direct interaction.&#38;nbsp;

Tormor quarry, a left behind space used for material extraction. Within these abandoned quarries a particular form of interaction between man and land and their adaptation occurs and unfolds where natures compromises with the past impact of man over it. The site reveals a interpose of forms of matter, where land is metabolised throughout the site.

Through a study of the underlining historical and speculative narratives, beginnings of spaces are introduced that simply establish previous areas of use. The site being a manifestation of its past, designated spaces are pre marked, not only by physical forms, structures and lines on maps but by marks and residues that imprint on the land. Re-proposing the primal program of a stone working infrastructure, the granite scattered around the landscape is moved, worked upon, build out of and inhabited, as it was.

The structures remain incomplete, suggesting potential for their development of construction or deconstruction. Instructing the past and enabling the future. The project looks at three stages of processes, the found conditions of a landscape that is created by removal of matter. Re-integrating human inhabitation and past social affairs established unintentionally by the workers. Finally allowing the site for a re construction of itself.

Reality is multifaceted and we are never able to see everything at the same time. What we perceive instead, are levels of cognition that are variations of the same place.

This site on the Isle of Mull exists within different levels of contraction or relaxation, done by a subject, to the landscape. The more our consciousness contracts the elements together, the less degree of detail is shown. The contraction, however, is not a sequence of repetitive actions, but rather a fusion of elements into a coherent whole. It is the action that we are conducting constantly, establishing connections and forming space.

Each level contains a totality of elements but keeps them fused into different forms, different “wholes”, while the others remain obscured. Atoms do not constitute a rock, rocks and soil do not constitute a hill, hills and rivers do not constitute a valley, valleys and clouds do not constitute a storm.

The story takes us through three different levels: systematic order, circular order, and chaos. These spaces are constructed by taking bits of reality and combining them within the rooms of the AA, which are assembled through film.

The “alternative reality” is then created within the actual site, the “universal space” that contains everything at once.
