How can we look at the landscape to understand it better?
The Balmeanach Valley on the Isle of Mull is a site managed by one farmer who, together with the land, is the main character in this work. Through documentation and observation, his work routine can be traced to explain the functionality of the landscape. He inhabits the whole site that is covered by sunlight with his routine, but there is an unexplored area that is always in the shadows.
This project presents a method to bring sunlight to this unused piece of land and in doing so, use architecture to provide a knowledge transfer of his understanding of the land, to future generations.
The design utilises a process of mapping through film. It explores how a space becomes territory through acts of framing and making it visible. The physical structure itself, challenges and works with the constraints of this location - offering a teaching method for future generations that immortalises the farmer's relationship with his land.
