In landscapes, space can be divided and invaded by mediums of continuity and flow, giving the inmates five hours of active practice in a specific site. In this process, for five hours, the virtual walls of the open prison expand over the entire island. A new prison system redefines the nature of ‘open’. How is space invaded by landscapes to create different spaces within 5 hours?
If we think of ‘territory’ as space and ‘time’ as time, we can quantify changes in time in terms of territory. Such an approach to movement and measurement can be achieved simultaneously on the specific landscapes of the Isle of Sheppey.
The prison no longer exists.
Practice is the new way of being.
Practicing is the journey to the destination.
Time in prison folds and expands through the whole island.
The landscape breaks down the prison walls, extending the territory across the island, giving practitioners new practice during 24 hours.
