The Ways of Water
05–2023

Title: The Devil’s Quoits Hotel & Spa: The Ways of Water
Name: Angus Govier
Voiceover: Angus Govier
Sound: Various

The water of the Dix Lake near Devil’s Quoits creates a fluid canvas for the landscape to be projected onto. The surface provides a heterotopic realm with near-perfect reflections doubling the landscape into a liminal domain. Occasionally, algal blooms have disrupted this canvas, abstracting the once-clear, specular reflections of the landscape. Fertilizer runoff from nearby farms has led to eutrophication across the lake, killing biodiversity and staining nature’s mirror.

In this project, both the aesthetic and acoustic properties of water have been harnessed to create a spa and hotel that heals both the environment and the user simultaneously. Water symbolises purity and life and has been treated as its own user group in the design process. A water purification room treats the lake water and wastewater, transporting purified water inside large stone walls throughout the proposal. This allows for the sounds of flowing and splashing water to be heard from all over the proposal. The project also caters to disabled users and those suffering from chronic pain, utilizing more traditional and holistic healing methods.
